An audit of the state of the Telstra telephone network in Dartmouth has shown it is in a state of disrepair, with leaves and other debris found in one communications pit and exposed wires & plastic bags holding Telstra’s Network together across other locations.

CEPU NSW Branch Assistant Secretary Shane Murphy said the town’s Telephone & Internet services were continually failing due to the failure by Telstra to invest in upgrading the local exchange and network.

The lack of action on a long-overdue, much-needed network upgrade was affecting emergency services, costing local businesses and leaving community members behind other regional areas

“People in Dartmouth are not getting the telephone and internet services they deserve,” Mr Murphy said.

“The Dartmouth exchange and copper network are well past their use-by date. The pictures show the network is not being maintained properly and it’s failing dismally to provide the services needed for a moder, 21st century phone network.

“It’s not good enough. Telstra should immediately invest in upgrading Dartmouth’s network.

“This is the copper network the Federal Government believes can connect the ‘fibre to the node’ NBN to people’s homes. The Dartmouth community deserves better”.
